The Voice Advocacy Service has been managed by Ayr Action for Mental Health since 1989 and was the first advocacy service of its type in the area at that time. The Advocacy service is a joint funded project. The main funders are NHS Ayrshire & Arran and South Ayrshire Council.

The Voice Advocacy Service has its base at 27 – 29 Crown Street, Ayr, KA8 8AG.

What is advocacy?

Advocacy is about having your views and opinions heard – not other people’s.

What is an advocate?

Some one who will ensure that you are supported in making choices which are important in your life.

What will advocate do?

  • listen and support you in putting your views across
  • ensure you are included in all decisions
  • attend meetings with you
  • provide you with information
  • be honest and truthful with you
  • do things WITH you whenever we can, and FOR you when you are unable

What an advocate will not do?

  • talk about you to anyone
  • make decisions for you
  • make promises which can’t be kept

Who can have an advocate?

  • People living in South Ayrshire suffering the effects of poor mental health and/or Dementia.
  • Aged 16 and over.

Our advocates will respect your confidentiality at all times.

Monday – Thursday 9.00am to 5.00pm – Friday 9.00am – 12.00 noon

We have a telephone answering machine which we will respond to within one working day. We will need information from you to allow us to make contact as quickly as possible. All requests for an advocate are considered at the VOICE ADVOCACY team meeting held every Monday at 10.00am. Thereafter an advocate will make contact as soon as possible to set up an initial meeting.
